One of the most confusing progression systems in TL is the Trait system, which at first glance seems quite convoluted and isn't explained very well by the in-game Help screen. In this guide we will explain what Traits are and how you can unlock and upgrade them to improve your equipment. For more guides about Throne & Liberty, please check our Throne & Liberty Guides Page. What Are Traits in Throne & Liberty? Traits are additional stat boosts tied to a piece of Equipment. When you equip the item, the buff will be applied to your character's stats. Equipment of Uncommon (green) and above rarity can have Traits on them, with the number of potential traits depending on the rarity. Epic (purple) items can have up to three Traits. Different equipment types have different Traits available. When you loot a new piece of equipment, it has a randomly selected Trait from the pool of potential Traits for that item type. Traits are a vital aspect of gear progression in Throne & Liberty. Getting optimal and fully upgraded Traits on all of your equipment is a gradual process, but it will make your character significantly stronger once you finish the process. You may want to check out the Builds Page and Build Editor for ideas about which traits to use for your equipment. Unlocking Traits in Throne & Liberty The first step on your Trait progression journey is to unlock the Traits you want for your equipment. To get started, open the Equipment Enchanting screen via the Main Menu, then choose the Traits tab. There are currently three ways to unlock a new Trait for an item in Throne & Liberty: With another of the same item - Obtain a copy of your current item that has a different Trait (the Trait you want to add). You can then apply the Trait from one item to the other. This process will destroy the item from which you are getting the Trait. With an Extracted Trait - You can use an Extracted Trait to bypass the grind of obtaining an item with the Trait you want. Extracted Traits are usually purchased from other players via the Auction House. These can be consumed to apply their Trait to your item. With Trait Unlockstones - Trait Unlockstones are a special item that can be consumed to unlock a trait of your choice. The amount of stones consumed depends on the item. Trait Unlockstones are earned through various methods, including Mystic Portals, Lithograph completion, Dynamic Events and the premium Battlepass. Unlocking Traits in Throne & Liberty The maximum number of Traits you can unlock on an item depends on its rarity, but it will never exceed three Traits. Converting Traits in Throne & Liberty This process is similar to Unlocking Traits but instead allows you to replace an existing Trait with another one. The most common reason for Trait Conversion is to replace the Trait already present in the first slot when you obtained the item. To Convert a Trait, you need a duplicate of the item with the desired Trait or an Extracted Trait, and you also need Trait Conversion Stones. The amount of stones required depends on the item. Levelling Traits in Throne & Liberty Once you have the Trait that you want for your item, you can begin levelling the Trait to improve its potency. To level up a Trait, you need another item of the same type, which will be consumed during the process. This is why it's a good idea to save up your old equipment when you are levelling up your character. Sacrificing an item of the same rarity will grant a 100% chance to upgrade the Trait. If the item is one tier lower, this drops to a 10% chance. If the item is two tiers lower, this drops to a 1% chance. The item you are using as an upgrade material will be destroyed regardless of success or failure. However, if you fail the upgrade roll, the upgrade chance will be saved as a Blessing. You can choose to consume all of your accumulated Blessing to add its value to a Trait Upgrade roll. You can save up to 100% Blessing, enough to guarantee a successful roll, but in practice, you are unlikely to need that much. Extracting Traits in Throne & Liberty If you find an item with a Trait that is good but not required for your character, or you've fully upgraded your character's gear already, what should you do with the items? One option is to turn them into Extracted Traits. This process destroys the item but creates a token that can be traded to other players (most commonly via the Auction House). The player who buys the Token can then use it to put the Trait on one of their items. This is a viable way of earning Lucent in Throne & Liberty, so don't throw away Traited items without checking how valuable the Trait is in the Auction House.
