Welcome to our Runes guide for Throne & Liberty.

In this guide, we will explain what Runes are, the different types of Runes available in the game, how to unlock and upgrade Runes, and how to make use of Rune Synergies for additional stat bonuses.

For more guides about a variety of topics in TL, please check our Throne & Liberty Guides Database.

What Are Runes in Throne & Liberty?

Runes are an incremental upgrade system intended for end-game equipment. Items can have up to three Runes applied to grant additional bonuses, but not all items can be equipped with Runes.

You can get Rune-compatible items in the following slots:

  • Weapons
  • Belts
  • Rings
  • Necklace
  • Bracers

To begin with, Runes you find will be low level and only provide small stat boosts. But as you progress with the Rune system, the buffs will become significantly stronger. Runes are an important part of end-game character building in Throne & Liberty.

Rune Types

There are three Rune types in Throne & Liberty. The types are colour coded for easy identification.

  • Attack Runes (Red) - Increase your damage potential by boosing stats such as Hit, Critical Hit and Heavy Attack Chance
  • Defence Runes (Blue) - Increase your defensive stats such as HP, Evasion and Endurance, making it easier to survive.
  • Support Runes (Yellow) - Support Runes provide other buffs such as healing bonuses or damage resistance.

Unlocking Rune Sockets

Equipment items that can be equipped with Runes will begin with up to three locked Rune Sockets. Before equipping a Rune, you'll need to unlock the sockets.

To get started, mouse over the item in your inventory and choose the Rune Management button, which will bring up the Rune Management menu. You should be able to see locked Rune Sockets.

Unlocking Rune Sockets requires a consumable item called Rune Hammers.

You can obtain Rune Hammers by:

  • Dissolving unwanted Runes in your inventory to get Rune Fragments. Once you have 100 Rune Fragments, you can craft a Rune Hammer at a Senior Crafting vendor in Stonegard Castle.
  • Buy them from the Contract Coin Merchant (up to 10 per week)
  • Purchase them from the Auction House
  • From Weekly and Battle Pass Rewards

When you have the required Rune Hammers, click the socket to unlock it. You can then place a Rune from your inventory into the socket.

How to Upgrade Runes

Your Runes have a Rune Level that determines how powerful they are. Each time you get a new Rune, it has a small chance of being 1 level higher than your previous best Rune of the same type.

Therefore, the best way to upgrade your Runes is to actively farm them and obtain as many as possible.

The best ways to obtain lots of Runes are:

  • Complete dungeons in the Challenge Dimensional Circle. You can then dissolve excess Runes and use the fragments to create Rune Hammers or Rune Chance Chests
  • Open Rune Bundles from World Events
  • Get Rune Chance Chests from Weekly Rewards
  • Defeat World Bosses and Archbosses

Rune Synergies

Arranging equipped Runes in a specific order can grant you additional bonuses. The strength of the bonuses depends on the rarity of the runes - for example, to get the Rare version of the Synergy, all three of the Runes must be Rare.

The following Synergies are currently available:

  • Max Health Increase & Dexterity Boost - Red, Blue, Yellow
  • Max Health Increase & Wisdom Boost - Red, Yellow Blue
  • Move Speed & Dexterity Boost - Blue, Yellow, Red
  • Move Speed & Wisdom Boost - Blue, Red, Yellow
  • Critical Hit Damage Reduction & Dexterity - Yellow, Red, Blue
  • Critical Hit Damage Reduction & Wisdom - Yellow, Blue, Red
