Why Throne & Liberty Players Aren't Happy about Loot Distribution Rules

Andrew 1 week ago

Throne & Liberty's much-anticipated international release took place just over a month ago, and the new MMORPG has mostly fared well since then, maintaining a healthy player count as players work on getting to grips with the game's various progression systems, hoping to create a powerful character to help out their Guilds.

One of the most important parts of making a strong Build in Throne & Liberty is obtaining rare and powerful armour, weapons and jewellery. Previously hidden, the rules that dictate how the game decides who gets loot and who doesn't have now been revealed, and many players aren't happy about what they discovered.

What's Wrong with TL's Loot Rules?

To put it simply, Throne & Liberty's loot rules decide who gets loot using a system called Contribution. Each player who is present at a battle needs to earn a certain amount of Contribution to have a chance of getting loot.

When farming simple trash enemies in a public dungeon this is less of a problem, because you only need to be the first person to damage an enemy to get Contribution, and you can run with a group to get a share of their loot.

But things get more controversial when it comes to the boss and archboss rules - this is where the really good items can drop, and to earn Contribution, you need to either deal damage to the boss or heal players who are fighting the boss. If you don't meet a minimum Contribution threshold, you won't get any loot at all.

There has been some fallout from this revelation, as quite a lot of players are unhappy about it and feel the system is unfair.

Player Reaction

Players on the Throne & Liberty subreddit have been reacting to the loot distribution rules, and it's fair to say that many of them are annoyed.

The most common criticism is that Tanks are being unfairly punished in what seems to be an obvious oversight by the developers, since you can only get Contribution from either damage or healing, and Tanks tend to do less of both of these things because they are built defensively and instead focused on taunting enemies and doing Crowd Control. This also raises a worry that players will be funnelled into specific roles to get a fair roll of the loot dice.

Another interesting complaint is that players who already have good gear have a higher chance of getting loot than other players since they have greater damage or healing potential. This creates a kind of feedback loop where the players who already have the best gear will keep getting more and more drops while everyone else gets less.

Quite a few players expressed their feelings that this system is unfair and should be replaced with a simple RNG chance system, with the possible exception of Conflict Bosses (Bosses where Guild-based PvP is enabled).

It remains to be seen how Amazon and NCSoft will react to these concerns and whether any changes will be made in response to the player outcry.
